Which xserver-xorg-video-* package does Guest Additions use?

Post by catkin »

Hello :-)

I'm trimming down an ubuntu 8.04.2 guest with Guest Additions and would like to remove unused xserver-xorg-video-* packages. Which one(s) -- if any -- are necessary, both with and without Guest Additions?

[Edit: the host is ubuntu 8.04.2 running VirtualBox 2.1.2]

Best

You can tell which version you are using by entering X -version on your terminal.

Or you can open a terminal and type apt-get --help and see what else you can do.

What you do at this point is your decision.

Thanks Perryg :-)

That says I'm running "X.Org X Server 1.4.0.90" but does not identify which of the many possible xserver-xorg-video-* packages are in use. Their full names suggest they are for specific video adapter hardware:

Code: Select all

I'm hoping to be able to save some disk space by removing the unused ones.

dpkg -l will list some for you. Or go to http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/ and look for it yourself ;). We're not an Ubuntu forum here.

Thank you for taking the time to reply, Sasquatch :)

The question is a VirtualBox question, not an ubuntu question: which (if any) xserver-xorg-video-* package does VirtualBox Guest Additions for Linux use? And which (if any) xserver-xorg-video-* package does VirtualBox without Guest Additions for Linux use?

Some dpkg -l output is shown in my previous post.

Think about what those packages are. They are video drivers. Do you see any xserver-xorg-video-virtualbox? I don't. I always remove them all, except for vesa because it's the fallback driver.

Thanks Sasquatch :)

That's perfect -- exactly the information, based on experience, I was looking for.

I suspected as much (hence the question) but was being cautious.
