OpenGL issues guest XP & eDrawings

Post by vespaman »

Since the OpenGL support arrived to VirtualBox, I have been using it extensively, but I have a few issues, which makes the host crash(or hang).

The program that I use in the Windows guest, Solidwork eDrawings, is a software for viewing 3d CAD models, and when I run this program, many times it ends up with me having to press the reset button on my computer. Let's say that I have learned to save my settings before starting this application :)
Sometimes there's garbage left in the virtual machine's display window, where the open GL window of eDrawings where, even after eDrawings has been closed. This garbage will stay until ending the virtual machine.

Could this be related to the nvidia binary drivers that I use? (I have tried a few versions, but they have a similar effect regarding this).

Or, has this behavior been seen under other configurations/applications?

As the box freezes, I don't know how to collect any crash information.

My host box:
Linux version 2.6.28-gentoo (root@atle) (gcc version 4.3.2 (Gentoo 4.3.2-r2 p1.5, pie-10.1.5) ) #1 SMP Fri Jan 2 12:34:24 CET 2009
nvidia-drivers 180.44
Virtualbox 2.1.4
Windows XP
xorg 7.4, xorg-server 1.5.3-r5

Otherwise, VirtualBox is working perfectly!

I am having the same issue. (just about same setup)

unclear-able 'garbage' and crashing is limited to ('07) Solidworks only.

'05 Auto Cad, works 100%

CATIA V5R17(or16) gets 'garbage' but shrinking window and re-opening window clears garbage. No computer crash.
-CATIA is considered and 'heavier' program than Soildworks and in a natural XP environment crashes frequently.
-Both Solidworks and CATIA are made by Dassault Systems.

Or would I be better off just using straight windows for design? <This topic> Thanks for your help/advice, Dan
Dan, please don't cross post. It makes our life difficult. If you want to bump a topic, then add a footnote post or use the Bump facility.

These issues sound like issues around OpenGL support. This is still experimental but improving over the releases. There's not much more that I can say at this stage.
