Connecting a Shared Folder

First off, yes I have searched the board for this. I have found a number of topics concerning this but just seems like I can not seem to find a clear and concise on how this is to work.

I'm running the latest version of Mac OS X Leopard with a Guest install of Win XP SP3.

I'm really trying to stick with VB as I have tested the other two big virtual systems but so far want to keep to the Open Source brand. The other two big virtual systems sets up very easy with a shared folder and with VB I havve followed what I thought was the right setup for a shared folder between my Mac and VB.

I want to share my "Home" folder from my logged in Mac user and have that folder show up as a shared folder in VB.

I have the Guest Additions installed and with the Shared Folder option selected I have my home folder as the folder I want to share.

I do not want to have it as another folder that I need to create on the Mac side. This makes it all pointless. When I want to use a file in VB, I should not need to make a copy of the file into another folder just to share.

Also, in sharing prefs. on the mac I have my home folder set to share with SMB to see if that would help but still do not see a shared folder in my guest OS.

So far the only way I have been able to share is to type in setup a Network Drive. This is not what I want on my network but so far the only way it will work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tks,

.

How else would you expect to be able to put a shared folder in Windows? That is the way it works. If you setup the network shared folder that you told VBox to use and it was on the MAC it will show up in the file manager only as a shared drive for which you will assign a drive letter to it. If you are doing this as the manual says and from the command prompt "net use x: \\vboxsvr\sharename" put a (-p) without the () end to make it persistent, or use the file manager and tell it to reload on boot.

Have a look at chapter 4.6 of the users manual. Pretty much tells it all.

I've posted a simialr question, and pretty much the response u got was similar to mine RTFM, what is it, that we can't help each other here rather than acting holier than thou, so disappointing

Actually this is not the same kind of answer Kepi. This is how it works in Windows. I provided what it takes to mount the drive.

A procedural, correct method for sharing your Mac folders with your Windows guest running in Virtual Box.

You MUST have Guest Additions installed. (A once-only necessity)
On the MAC side
• do menu selection VirtualBox VM > Devices > Install Guest Additions...
(After the installation is complete restart your Virtual Box Windows guest.)

To set up a 'shared' folder
On the MAC side
• do menu selection VirtualBox VM > Devices > Shared Folders...
(Use the dialog box to select the folder you want to share. Note that the Folder Name field MUST be one_word_only).

To access the 'shared' folder
from the Virtual Box Windows Guest
• click Start Menu > My Network Places
• double click Entire Network
• double click VirtualBox Shared Folders
(You should now see and have access to all the folders that have been shared from the Mac side.)

Note: If you can access the folder on the Mac then you can set it up and access it from Windows without telling the Mac OS side the folder needs special privileges or needs to be a shared folder.)

jonnix, I found your post particularly useful.
I was struggling to get shared folders working, was using the correct share path in Windows but it just would not play.
I was sure I have installed guest additions but it turns out I hadn't
Once I installed it, and followed your instructions it worked like a dream straightaway.
MANY THANKS!

As a bonus, I have found that the guest additions also makes the host key unnecessary (which is great) and windows now auto sizes to my MacBook screen rather that giving me scrollbars. Wish I'd installed it ages ago!

Hey, I've been trying to get shared folders to work for the longest time and somehow I just can't figure it out. I feel pretty dumb because I've been reading stuff about how to do it everywhere but I can't quite get it. I don't think I have guest additions installed but I can't figure it out.
I'm running a Windows XP guest on my Mac...my goal in this is to be able to add songs to my Zune on the Windows guest since Mac and Zune aren't compatible. So I need to be able to have shared folders working and also have the Windows guest be able to recognize my Zune.

Can someone help me out a bit? It'd be extremely appreciated. Sorry, I feel pretty slow in figuring this out. Maybe these screenshots will help. Thanks.

Hello guys,

Please help me!
I have installed the VirtualBox 3.2.8 for OS X hosts Intel Macs
on my macbook pro,
My questions are:
- Do we need to install Windows OS first or the Guest Additions first?
- How to install the Guest Additions? - I am clicking like crazy in the DEVICE/INSTALL GUEST ADDITIONS, but absolutely nothing happens!
- Is the Guest Additions coming in a separate download?, where to find it?

Thanks
J

You install the Guest OS first. Then add the Guest Additions, because the Additions vary according to what/which OS you first installed as the Guest.

You should notice that the CD Drive in the Guest has a CD loaded. Play/Run it.
