Hello, I recently installed virtual box in my ubuntu 8.10 netbook, because its free and I want to use to virtualize win xp in my machine. I downloaded the .deb file from virtual box homepage, it asked me if I wanted to compile the headers and I said yes. It seemed to install ok, but then I realized that my eth0 and my ath0 network interfaces were lost. I tried to use ifconfig eth0 up to configure my ethernet connection, but It is not working. When I try to use wlanconfig for creating ath0 interface, I get an ioctl error message. Can anyone help please?

Did you reboot?
Did you get any error messages when you compiled or installed VBox.
What does lspci -v show?
What does ifconfig show?
Might want to post these here.

Yes I did reboot. I also restarted the network with /etc/init.d/networking restart.
The output of ifconfig only shows the lo interface.

The output of lpsci -v is:

When I intalled virtual box, It showed an error message saying that libqt4-gui was not installed it, so I instlaled it. Then it showed the following message:

Code: Select all

? Unable to find a precompiled module for the current kernel! ?
 ? ?
? Without a suitable kernel module you will not be able to start any VMs. ?
? It is strongly recommended to compile a kernel module now. The kernel ?
? headers and the tools to build kernel modules (gcc, make, binutils, ...) ?
? are required. However if you know that a suitable kernel module already ?
? exists at another location, you might want to override the default by ?
 ? setting KDIR=<full_path_to_vboxdrv_module> in /etc/default/virtualbox. ?
? The compilation can also be done later by executing ?
 ? ?
 ? /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup ?
 ? ?
 ? as root.
I already executed /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup, but it did not worked, how can I solve this? Thanks in advance.

You need to read section 4.3.1 of the VBox users manual. Follow the instructions and then see what happens.
