hi im tring to restore a Norton Ghost image on my Vbox and its is very slow
i am running Kubuntu 8.10 (intalled with Gnome first then added KDE)
it restores with 30MB/min (and a 11GB restore takes 8 hours!) when it should be something like 500MB/Min (when i use it on the PC without the Vbox) and also the Vbox takes 50% of the CPU (constantly even if nothing is running) and well thats bad :\
any ideas?

If you don't give any network settings, we can't help you. I get decent speeds with NAT, but you might want Host Interface to restore from the network. If you're restoring from a USB device, don't. USB is not up to speed in VB.

i mount an ISO image (network disabled) and its still doesnt explain why it uses 45-50% of the CPU even when i just start it (or waiting untill i chose something from the HirenCD menu)
(when it exctacts Ghost.exe fromt he cd it takes over 15 sec when normally its so fast i dont even notice it)

What VBox settings is the VM using?

well i cycled them all nothing really helped (the only dif was when i enabled vt-x/AMD-V but then the graphic gone crazy (started displaing lots of colors on the screen an i could not see almost anything..inside the VM )
right now ACPI,IO apic,PAE/NX enabled
1024ram (from 3gb total) 128video with 3D acceleration and ntfs

Only acpi on, the rest off, don't forget any.

btw when i load hirenCD9.6 i load it with ATAP and SCSI drivers (auto and "Standard cdrom drivers" seems to get stuck)

and? both cores on 100% ( i also tried installing it under windows and making the same thing there no change still works slowly (20mb/min) anyway i am getting tired of this i just left it 8 hours so far and its on 69% i will leave it trough the night it should finish until tomorrow... i just hope the OS itself(winxp) will run much faster...

I don't use Ghost anymore, but it could be the program itself. I do know that during boot operations, the system usually uses the full CPU, even in VMs. It's possible that Ghost does the same and that's causing the slow transfer speed. I use Acronis TrueImage now, and else there is the free alternative CloneZilla.

well seems so i took an ISO of winXP isntall and it finished it in a few min and evrything is working noramally i guess its the ghost or the drivers it uses to start hirencd cos it stucks when the usual cd drivers loads so u need to select ATAPCI manually. anyway i guess problem solved...and vbox doesnt like ghost

I tried to get my Ghost to boot, but it wouldn't create an image. Doesn't really matter, 'cause I saw my CPU usage go up the moment the VM started and it never went down until I shut it down. Ghost runs in DOS, which doesn't understand the CPUs like today so it takes a lot of CPU power to let it work properly. That's the speed decrease. Another reason to give up on those old tools.
