Ubuntu screen goes blank after upgrade to 9.04 (beta)

Hello,

I used Ubuntu 8.10 on Windows XP host (VBox ver 2.1.4).
I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 beta and I haven't been able to get X started since.
Splash screen is disabled so I see all the startup commands being executed. No problems or errors reported. The "login" line shows for a very short time before the screen goes completely blank.
I have tried to change the xorg.conf file (there's a .failsafe version in /etc/X11) but no improvements.

I don't know how to debug this problem (I'm quite new to Linux).

Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance.

The issue is most likely the driver for X itself. 9.04 uses a new Xserver version compared to 8.10, so you need to install the GA again. See the Jaunty GA topic in Linux Guests.

Thanks Sasquatch.
I'll try to find out how to do what you ask me to do (not sure what "GA" is) ...

Ah, I see: GA = Guest Additions.
I mounted the ISO in the virtual drive but it doesn't look like Unubtu sees it (can't find it in the /mnt, /media or in the /cdrom folders.
Perhaps I need to mount it by hand?

That's where my howto comes to play. Check the VirtualBox FAQ, it has a link. Or just look at the Linux Guests forum.

Thanks for this. The answer is easy when you know how!

In my case I knew enough to know what the problem was, but not enough to get the GAs installed from the command line (my knowledge is still patchy).
