I am trying to in install Hardy Heron 8.4.2 amd 64 on a virtual machine. Every time I try and install I get the following message
This kernal requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i1586 CPU. Unable to boot - please use kernel appropriate for your CPU.

I have virtulization enabled in the bios. I have enabled in advanced settings, ACPI, IO APIC, VT-x/AMD-V.

my rig is a
Asus M3N78 M/B

Are you sure your CPU supports AMD-v? You can check that with the CPU flags in /proc/cpuinfo. It need to say VMX or VMS. I couldn't find it on Google, only the other flags and info about the CPU, but none about AMD-v Virtualization.

Yes it does support according to "linux Format" magazine if you type /cat/proc/cpuinfo, they say under flags for intel cpu you should see vmx and "svm" for AMD mine has svm

Ok, now what does the logs say about it? Did you really enable all options for the 64 bit support (so you select Linux/Ubuntu 64 bit)?

You also need PAE. The logs can be seen by right clicking on the VM, then select Logs. The logs are saved on the hard drive in the VM folder, under the subdirectory Logs. By default, VMs are saved in your user profile. Check ~/.VirtualBox/machines/<vmname>/Logs.

You check the logs if Virtualization is actually picked up by the VM. It's either called Virtualization, VMX or SVM.

thanks

Well, like it's stated, it can't find the VMX or SVM CPU flag. A grep svm /proc/cpuinfo. With that, it will give output if it is found, else it will return nothing. Double check everything.
