Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
Software and Hardware Environment:
Host Computer Hardware: Dell Studio XPS Desktop 435MT
Host Computer Software: Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit) running VirtualBox 2.1.4
Guest 1: Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with SP2 (64 bit). Domain Controller
Guest 2: Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise with SP2 (64 bit). Member Server
I know there is another post regarding this same exact matter. That post may be found here....
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 21&start=0
The solution in the aforementioned post is to increase the RAM in the guests. Unfortunately, that does not work so how do I resolve this issue? Is this a bug with VB?

Re: Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
Try disabling Nested Paging and PAE/NX on the guest and see if you still have this problem. I was having a similar problem with XP 64-bit and disabling those options in the guest solved the problem.

Yes, I checked the event logs and there is nothing unusual.vbox4me2 wrote:Did you check all the eventlog's ?
I disabled Nested Paging (I never had PAE/NX enabled) and insofar the Guest OSs are shutting down without any issues. I will definitely reply to this post if that changes.Tosk wrote:Try disabling Nested Paging and PAE/NX on the guest and see if you still have this problem. Re: Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
I have the same problem on my system
Host Operating System: Windows XP SP3 32bit (clean and fresh installation)
Host Software: VirtualBox 2.2.2
Guest OS: Windows XP3 32bit
Sometimes when I shutdown my guest operating system, the whole vm hangs after the virtual screen turns blank. Sometimes I can't kill the virtualbox process.
VM Settings for this machine
ACPI: activated
IO APIC: deactivated
VT-x/AMD-V: activated
Nested Paging: deactivated
PAE/NX: deactivated

Re: Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
After update to 2.2.2 version sometimes vm hangs while shutting down (just before end - at the moment when it should be closed - screen isn't black).zerocoolx wrote:I have the same problem on my system

Never had such problems before today (before 2.2.2 update). Hungs XP guest as well as Linux guests. Host system: MS Vista SP1.

Re: Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
I'm having a similar problem since 2.2.0.
When I shutdown or reboot a Windows Guest (XP 32), it hangs with a black screen.
BUt I can always reboot the VM with ctrl+R.

I still have this problem and I can't reset my VM with Host+R. I have just reinstalled my host OS, but I have the same problemes with this new installation.

Re: Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
I have the same or a similar problem as the original.
When shutting down Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.04 in my virtualbox session, both hang just before powerdown. In the Ubuntu client I can actually see this log line on the screen. I have not tried it with my other OSes, but I'm assuming they're the same. Only way I can get VB to close is with a kill, which leaves the VM in an 'aborted' state.
Host: Ubuntu 9.04, AMD 64
VirtualBox 2.2.4
I did not have this problem with 2.0 on Ubuntu 8.04. I also did not have the problem on 2.2.4 on Ubuntu 8.04. The problem started on Ubuntu 9.04. I have tracked down the problem to PulseAudio as the Host Audio Driver. If I choose PulseAudio, I have the problem (and no sound in the client, BTW). If, instead, I enable ALSA, I do not have the problem (and I have sound again).
Whether this is a problem with VirtualBox or with PulseAudio on Ubuntu 9.04, I don't know. Yet.

Pulseaudio problem?
I doubt it, this Debian Lenny box runs ALSA, it also hangs on XP SP3 even with more memory and nested paging disabled. And I got the problem starting with 2.2.4, I think.

Re: Guest OSs Intermittently Hang on Shutdown and Reboot
I just upgrade to 2.2.4 from 2.2.2, disabled to audio, increased the ram a little and they shutdown fine now. My original problem : I have 3 Windows XP VMs and if I shutdown all of them at once, it would error out. One at a time they would shutdown normal.....idk if this helps anyone.
