Extract vdi image and run it independantly

Hi guys,
I'm new to virtualization, and I would like to know if I can extract my Windows 7 vdi file and get it to run at boot.
Currently my host is Ubuntu 8.10 and im finding that virtualizing windows 7 was a BAD idea... way too slow, however i installed quite a lot of useful stuff and dont want to go through the whole process again.
Hopefully I shouldnt have any problems repairing the mbr and getting windows to run, I just need to know how to extract the vdi image.
I read:
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14280
http://vbox.innotek.de/pipermail/vbox-u ... 02961.html
And couldn't understand what exactly was going on. The second post seemed more useful, but was vague.. :s
I'm just running through this post:
http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=9697
and it seems to be what im looking for, but I sure could use some help! thanks!
