Restore XP Acronis Slow
Restore XP Acronis Slow
Hi,
My first post, and definitely not the last one. I'm in love with Virtualbox.
I'm on Ubuntu 8.10 / VirtualBox 2.1.4.
I'm trying to P2V my XP workstation to Virtuabox. I'm an Acronis Workstation and Server officionados, so I did create an image of my workstation.
To restore my machine, I boot from my acronis CD, and restore my backup image from my USB drive.
My Image size is 30GB, and it will take over 15 hours. This is really really really slow. Is there a way to optimize this.
Thanks for your help
PS: On a physical machine, it takes around 30 minutes to restore

Re: Restore XP Acronis Slow
How are you restoring the image? Did you attach the USB directly to the VM, or did you share it over the network and access the image through normal file sharing? I cloned my VM to a physical drive once and used a network share to store the image on, and then restored it from that same share. It all took about two hours or so (including remounting hard drive).

Re: Restore XP Acronis Slow
I'm booting from an Acronis CD ISO on the VM.
The USB drive is attached to the VM, so Acronis sees the USB drive.
In the VM option, I did NOT check "Enable SATA controller" I'll try.

Re: Restore XP Acronis Slow
Sata won't speed it up that much for a restore, use Host networking, add a (usb)share from the Host, map a drive to the Host usb drive from acronis, that will go alot faster.

Re: Restore XP Acronis Slow
Don't add the USB drive to the VM. Instead, set up Samba on the Host so the USB drive is shared through the network. There are dozens of howto's on the web for configuring Samba, so I won't explain it here. After you've done that, you can boot the VM with either HIF or NAT. With NAT, you connect to 10.0.2.2 for the Host. Else you use the normal IP address to access the Host. Now the restore should go a lot faster.

I'm tryring this
VBoxManage sharedfolder add "Xp-Personne" -name "share" -hostpath /home/your/shared/folder/VirtualBoxShare/
Xp-Personne is the name of my new VM
I do not know what to type instead of "-hostpath /home/your/shared/folder/VirtualBoxShare/"
