I just mounted the partition /dev/sda2 as /media/47gb which used to be an NTFS partition that I recently formated to ext3. I thought that maybe I needed to reboot after I just mounted that partition and updated the fstab but I got the error again after a reboot. Not sure why.

Read the error message. Programmers do funny things like put the information that you need in them. Your second argument media/47gb/Vboxvdi/W2K3Eval3.vdi is path relative and Vbox assumes /home/<yourAccount>/.VirtualBox/ as the base, hence the file name /home/me/.VirtualBox/media/47gb/Vboxvdi/W2K3Eval3.vdi. This create fails because you don't have a subdirectory media/47gb/Vboxvd there. Try sticking the missing / in front
