Hello I use the following configuration - but when using VirtualBox on the following set-up, it says "Nested paging" is disabled - despite being enabled in the VM configuration:
Host:
Ubuntu 64-bit, v8.10
Intel Q9650 CPU
Asus P5Q mobo (all h/w virtualization options enabled that I can tell)
8GB RAM
nVidia GTX260 mobo
Compiz is activated
VirtualBox 2.14 (64-bit)
Running Windows XP 32-bit guest
Again, the guest OS configuration has "Nested Paging" checked. Yet when I run the OS, it says it is disabled. VT-x/AMD-v does show "enabled", however.
Is there a way to force enabling of nested paging?
Thanks!

Re: VirtualBox question: Nested Paging not available for my con
Only if the CPU has it. It will become available after you enable VT-x/AMD-v. If you have that on, Nested Paging should also become available. But how do you see it's on anyway? Is the checkbox ticked, but disabled?

Re: VirtualBox question: Nested Paging not available for my con
Correct. In the Advanced settings tab, VT-x/AMD-v and Nested Paging are available -- and checked.
When starting the XP guest session, on the lower right corner of the window, is a small chip-like icon with a "V" in the middle. Hovering the mouse pointer over the "V" reveals VT-x/AMD-v is enabled, but says nested paging is disabled.

nested paging is a feature of core-i7 not core2quad.
Re: VirtualBox question: Nested Paging not available for my con
Thanks for the info!
Core-i7; for virtualization purposes, is it worth upgrading to an i7 capable board with DDR3 and subsequently relegate my Q9650/P5Q Deluxe/DDR2-800 RAM elsewhere?

Only if you really want it. Don't expect any noticable performance increase just because Nested Paging is on.

well you'll also get some performance increases from the newer instruction set and design, but at the moment core-i7 is a bit too new and flaky anyway.Sasquatch wrote:Only if you really want it. Don't expect any noticable performance increase just because Nested Paging is on.
