Unable to install and run VM's

Hello,
I realize there must be hundreds if not thousands of posts like this around here, and believe me, I've tried searching to find a solution - but I guess my situation is different from everyone else's...
I have an Ubuntu (8.10) running VirtualBox 2.1.4, the Ubuntu machine is running in VMWare Server.
On the Ubuntu machine I'm trying to create and install a virtual machine (doesn't matter which guest OS), but it never works...I can successfully create the disk images, but as soon as the guest OS installer/boot manager launches the virtual machine either crashes (aborted) or displays a not so helpful "Guru medititation"/critical error and has to be shut down.
I've tried creating virtual machines and installing Windows 2003 R2, Windows 2003, Ubuntu 8.10 and FreeBSD 7.1 - it always ends the same...
I even tried creating the virtual machine on another physical machine and then copied it over to the Ubuntu machine, but the same thing happens then, when the machine starts, it either just aborts or displays the "Guru meditation" error again, depending on hardware settings.
Has anyone ran into a similar situation, or perhaps even know how to fix it? I'm guessing it's because VirtualBox is running inside another virtual machine, but this should be possible, shouldn't it?
Link to log file (VBox.log) included below (big log).
