USB crashes XP guest

Post by feutetejsd »

I'm running Virtualbox 2.1.4 on an Unubtu 8.04.2 host with a Windows XP guest. If I enable USB (including USB 2.0 with EHCI controller), Windows XP will boot but it freezes when I get to the XP desktop and XP detects the USB hardware and attempts to load drivers for it. Am I missing something? I have tried several different things to get USB working in my situation, but haven't found anything yet that has gotten USB working inside XP. Any thoughts?

I have the exact same problem in a similar setup (Ubuntu 8.04 64 bits as host, XP as guest). Each Time I boot with one usb drive attached, Windows crashes after accessing the drive.

Any help from anybody would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem, I couldn't get xp to install using the 2.1.4version of vmbox running on Ubuntu 8.1 on my e1705 laptop until I disabled the network support in vmbox. Now it seems to be working ok. I have the usb2.0 running, I have a usb mouse. It's probably not usb 2.0 but at least I'm getting somewhere.

in any case I see that this sw is not bug-free :)

have you tried loading the guest extensions? I seem to remember that they are necessary to use some of the host components in an xp vm.

...I installed the pro1GB desktop driver now, using NAT, working fine. I had to get the Intel driver though:

eh this forum has a bug in the file-attachment code...i tried to attach the Intel driver (12MB) and the forum software, it's screwing up big time.

of course I cannot unattach the file because when I click in the filename window it pop up the file manager.

BTW I'm using a seagate drive in a USB housing and it's working fine. But the XP install is accessing it as a share from the Linux host, not directly through USB.
That's probably why it's not working for you guys, Linux and XP are conflicting over which controls the drive.

in any case try loading the guest extensions...put the vm back in a window and look at the window menus.
