Network works but only if all computers are on it?

Post by lugoteehalt »

Ubuntu i386 guest; amd64 Debian Lenny host.

Got the simplest type of network that joins the guest into an existing 2 computer, laptop + desktop, ethernet network.

It works perfectly but only as long as the laptop is connected. It is inconvenient to always connect the laptop and boot it up.

Is there any way of just allowing the guest to network to the host without the laptop plugged in? I am particularly thick with VirtualBox - any answer at cretin level, would be nice. Thanks any help.

Get a cheap 20$ switch and plug it in, for windows there is a thing called loopback adapter, donno what this is with linux. have a look here http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=loo ... inux&meta=

Edit: whahahaha, lookback... ahum, loopback, a k or a p, they are so close on the keyboard

Great thanks. Post says: "lookback adaptor", should this be "loopback adaptor"? Loopback, lo, is something that is always present with address 127.0.0.1, I think. It is something about the computer being able to ping itself sort of thing. We are getting a bit technical perhaps.

The laptop is just acting as another computer, it is not specially configured to be able to plug into any network, if that's relevant.
