Hi,
Host = Ubuntu 8.10 x64. Guest = Windows 2008 x32 and x64.
The project involves SQL Server and VMs has to talk to each other by referring by computer name. The two VMs are standalone, no WINS server so I use static IP and hosts file to resolve the computer name. Since the switch to static IP, the guest OS can no longer access the internet. But ping within the local subnet 192.168.1.x works OK. NSLookup to external DNS name also works OK.
Some friends had suggested that it might be the host that blocks internet access. I see a post here in Ubuntu forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=667952 but I am not sure if that applies in my case.
Can you please suggest me an approach to fix the issue or at least a way to investigate to narrow down to the cause.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Win2008 Guest lost Internet after changing to static IP
Hehe, I forgot about that topic. I posted in it once. That situation no longer applies since 2.1.0, as there are no virtual interfaces anymore (unless you create one manually, but it's no longer an option of VB). In what way are the settings from static different than from the DHCP, other than the end IP of the OS itself? What does a traceroute say from the Host and the Guest to a name address like www.google.com and to it's IP address like 74.125.67.100?

Thanks very much for replying. I was almost desperate
- Winthin the VM (running Windows Server 2008). I changed the Network TCP/IP property from dynamic to Static IP
- The static IP is in the same subnet than the router (in my case 192.168.1.x)
- The static IP is in the range IGNORED by the DHCP server of the router.
I am going to run trace route tonight and will post the results, hopefully you can help to diagnose anything from that.Sasquatch wrote:What does a traceroute say from the Host and the Guest to a name address like http://www.google.com and to it's IP address like 74.125.67.100?

[SOLVED] Win2008 Guest lost Internet after chg to static IP
Hi,
Sorry for late reply. I finally have time to work on this project again. I changed the Windows TCP/IP back to dynamic IP. And rechanged back to static IP. And the problem simply has vanished. The VM can now connect to the Internet.
So the issue was probably either a fluke in my network equipment or a mistake I made in the network configuration (in Windows TCP/IP properties).
