No sound on Vista 64 guest

Am having trouble getting sound on Vista Ultimate 64 as guest on Ubuntu 8.10.
Configuration -
Ubuntu 64, 8.10 host
Virtualbox 2.1.4
Vista 64 ultimate guest
Lenovo T61 Intel dual core; 4 gig ram
Guest additions installed on guest
Hopefully I got the pertinent info here; will be happy to provide further detail.
Have tried the various combinations of sound driver in vbox settings for Vista. Specified the various specific audio settings in Ubuntu Preferences > Multimedia Systems Selector. Vista shows No audio device is installed.
Is there something I've missed in the setup or settings?
Any help gratefully appreciated.

And what did you set for audio? You give some information, but you fail to mention the most vital part.

Ok, in vbox, audio settings tried -
Null Audio Driver; ICH AC97
Null Audio Driver; SoundBlaster 16
OSS Audio Driver; ICH AC97
OSS Audio Dirver; SoundBlaster 16
ALSA Audio Driver; ICH AC97
ALSA Audio Driver; SoundBlaster 16
PulseAudio; ICH AC97
PulseAudio; SoundBlaster 16
Unbuntu settings, Default Output:
AutoDetect
ALSA; with device Default; AD198x Analog, AD198x Digital
OSS
PulseAudio Sound Server with device Default; ALSA PCM on front:0(AD198x Analog) via DMA
I did not change the device input settings, it is at ALSA
I'm pretty sure I tried all combinations of the above.
Thanks again.

Weird. With the default settings, ALSA and AC'97, you should have audio. Even if you select NULL, there should be an audio device in Vista. Check it's device manager for any unknown devices. If there is one, it's probably the audio controller (should be noted as multimedia device).

In Vista device manager I show a multimedia audio controller, with the famous M$ The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) error.
With settings in vbox of ALSA Audio Driver, ICH AC97; Ubuntu ALSA. I have audio in Ubuntu with or without vbox running Vista.
Should I try updating Vista? An internet & local machine search for a driver through Vista device manager comes up void.

What's the problem? Go to
www.realtek.com.tw and get the AC'97 driver from there.
