WinXP guest resolution problem

Post by tmc »

I'm running a WinXP guest with guest additions on an Ubuntu 8.10 host, running VB 2.1.4

My problem is that I cannot get XP to acknowledge any screen resolution other than 800x600 - higher or lower (I can change colour depth OK, however). My monitor goes up to 1280x800. Is there any way I can get my XP guest to go to a higher resolution, ideally full screen, but I'd happily settle for 1024x768.

If this has been asked before, I apologise. I have searched the forum, but cannot find an answer.

Many thanks,

Have a look at the VM pulldown menu options.

Um...

There's nothing in the menus that allows me to adjust the guest screen resolution. I can go to full screen from there, but all I get is an 800x600 screen in the middle of a vast black border; other than that, nothing.

A little further digging within the guest shows that the virtual adapter supports 640x480 and 800x600 resolution with 16, 256, 16 bit, 24 bit and 32 bit colour, but nothing above 800x600.

It must be a GA problem or a Host problem, have a look:

The Machine pulldown menu has Auto resize giving my Guest VM a resolution of 1016x696 in its current size.
Re-install GA or try some older GA version.

You're a star! :-)

I could have sworn I'd tried that earlier and it did nothing - but when I just tried it again, hey presto! Full screen!

I guess it must have been defective wetware :-)

Many, many thanks for your help and patience,

Hello,

I'm new to Virtualbox and have a similar problem. I'm using a HP 2240 netbook with Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows XP guest. I only get 640 x 480 res at 4 bit colour :x
Also I don't get the Runtime attributes to change the resolution in the post above???? I'm running the same version client and have reinstalled the client tools several times without any luck.
Any help would be appreciated :)
BTW the host runs at a 1024x576 (16:9) res

I have checked the device manager in the guest XP and it all seems happy enough, says it is working properly.Any ideas on why I don't even have the run time options in the Virtualbox options???

Thanks

Are you sure the Guest Additions are installed in XP ?

For example:

Thanks will give that a try, do you think it could be a problem with the fact that it is on a 10 inch netbook running at a 1024 x 576 res???

No, the GA video driver has all you need for high graphics, it could be a communication problem with the Host.
