Copy & Paste from aterm?

Post by ichilton »

Hi,

I'm running Virtualbox with Windows guests on an Ubuntu Linux host.

I can seamlessly copy and paste between Linux and the Windows Guests, but not when I copy from my aterm's?

aterm doesn't seem to have a right click menu / copy option - you normally copy by selecting the text and paste with the middle button.

Is there a way I can copy from an aterm and then paste into the Windows guest?

Thanks

Ian

What if you use Ctrl+Shift+C to copy and Ctrl+Shift+V to past? Does that work? Does aterm actually support copy/paste?

Odd - this seemed to work when I first tried it but doesn't any more...

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Ever considered reading the man page of aterm?
TEXT SELECTION AND INSERTION

The behaviour of text selection and insertion mechanism is similar to xterm(1).

Selection:
Left click at the beginning of the region, drag to the end of the region and release; Right click to extend the marked region; Left double-click to select a word; Left triple-click to select the entire line.
Insertion:
Pressing and releasing the Middle mouse button (or Shift-Insert) in an aterm window causes the current text selection to be inserted as if it had been typed on the keyboard.
I bet you feel silly now.

Hi,

I know - I use that all the time but it doesn't work when pasting into VirtualBox or when I copy in Virtualbox.

How come it works for me? I took some text from the VM, pasted that inside the aterm in the VM and it worked. Selected some text in aterm and could paste it with the middle mouse button in the same window I copied from earlier. My panel applet for clipboard is gone now, so I couldn't get it to see the VM copied text, but that shouldn't matter. If you can copy to and from the Guest outside of aterm, it will work inside aterm too.

But why using such a lousy terminal emulator anyway? Why not just xterm, or the terminal emulator from your desktop manager? The default gnome-terminal works a lot better than aterm.

Odd - it just doesn't work for me :(

I would prefer to use gnome-terminal because of the tabs but the font looks blurry when I put it white on black.

I managed to get aterm looking really nice with these in .Xdefaults:
aterm*font:*-*-fixed-medium-r-normal--*-132-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1
aterm*boldFont:*-*-fixed-bold-r-normal--*-*-132-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1

Thanks

If the font looks blurry, try a different one or a bit larger. Check the appearance settings too, you might need to enable or perhaps even disable anti-aliasing.

Interesting !!

Are you using a Windows guest on a linux host (which linux?)?

How did you paste into the aterm after copying in Windows? - with the middle click?

How did you paste into windows? - just select the text in aterm and middle click in windows?

Thanks

Worth a try holding down <shift> when copy and or paste.

There are at least n-million diferrent virtual terminal emulators: Eterm for example.

humm, I now seem to be able to copy in windows and paste into aterm - I just can't do it the other way - copy in aterm and paste into windows...

Is there any other ways of copying to the clipboard in the aterm?
