situation:

using SuSe 11.1 and VBox 2.1.4

i did set up a test maschine, and host interface with having the host a fixed ip and the guest as well. works perfect. have internet on both, can ping each other, can reach the guest from outside.


now went on to add this scenarioa on a productive machine. quite fresh SuSe 11.1 as well, and should be nothing strange on it. only difference i can see: 2 more ip´s (eth0:blabla, eth0:blablub). copyed the virtual machine, changed IP/mask/gw/dns.
now:
- i can ping the host from the guest
- i cant ping the guest from the host
- i cant ping the gateway from the guest (and by that nothing else)

i did check. recheck. checkcheck. check the check.

i can´t find any difference or mistake. didn´t find a similar thing on the forum. would judge id did, as the 2 sentences in the manual advice, on both machines.

since i am quite new to vbox, any advice on common errors - problems with 2.1.4 or logs to look for , maybe even a step by step troubleshooting for host interfaces would be great

So you checked the full network config, including routes?

routes / gateways as far as i can see on the host (linux) and guest (win xp), yes.

if there is a route "inside" virtual box, i did maybe miss that - but don´t see anything like that in the manual.

maybe i should try a nat-setup just to compare and get some more ideas ? is there a howto besides the thre lines example in the manual ?

i could bind a dedicated IP per guest to the hosts interface. how would i configure a NAT rule like "all/any from host-IP to guest, 2-ways" ?

i have the feeling it would maybe give me more input. at least i would compare those with wireshark. the packets on the test-machine seem to do what they should. on the productive they seem to go towards /dev/null

if the productive machnie would not be very productive and healthy , i would think its a bad NIC or driver....

Problem seems to be clear now...

the hoster www.serverloft.de / www.serverloft.com does rent out RIPE-registered subnet, but does only allow the MAC of the single connected root-server NIC.

they use mac-filtering and call all the MAC´s generated by VBox illegal, so they will not allowed spoofed mac adresses on their network.

their is no documentation on that before buy (or even after buy).

Glad to hear it's not a VB issue. If you want to use more than one machine, including VMs, you might want to buy a router.
