High CPU load when guest (WinXP) is idle on Ubuntu 8.04/x64

Post by bernroth »

Hello all!

I recently moved from VMware Workstation 6.5 to VirtualBox 2.1.4 and have now some heavy troubles with high CPU load.
VMware tools are removed, system cleaned from unused software and Vbox guest additions properly installed.
After startup and idle WinXP, the host VirtualBox process consumes 25% CPU. After some hours the load slowly increases until it reaches 100%. The guest is terribly slow, the taskmanager in XP still is idle/no running processes.
When I restart the guest it uses 25%, after 12 hours again 100%.
With VMware I had no similar issues.
The host is a HP xw6600 workstation with a E5420 CPU, 10gigs of memory and two 300GB/15k SAS disks. OS is a up-to-date Ubuntu 8.04/x64 (Kernel 2.6.24-23-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 01:04:16 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux).
Please find at the bottom the VBox configuration and log file.

<EDIT>
I just did a test on Windows XP as host. A copy of the Windows XP guest works fine and causes no excessive/unlogical CPU usage. It works fine even when it runs for hours.
Thus the reason of the problems may be due to the different host system.
</EDIT>

I really like VirtualBox as it works great with my TwinView X-Server. I would like to use it and avoid moving back to crappy VMware.

Please help!

Best regards,

Bernhard

Do you get the same response when you run the same situation on a brand new VM and OS install in it? The VM should only use one core, as VB only uses one core per VM. The load might get distributed over the cores, but added up is still one core.

I was testing some time ago the OpenSolaris 2008.11 image from http://virtualboximages.com/ and I had the same issues.
The VirtualBox process on the host system consumed about 30% CPU when the guest was idle.
Back to the Windows XP guest, the current CPU load is this:

16512 broth 20 0 1443m 1.0g 24m S 43 10.7 712:41.05 VirtualBox

From 26% (idle when freshly started) up to 43% after only 8 hours (I restarted the VM this morning).

Please let me know if you need more informations/debug logs from my host/guest.

Thank you all and a nice week-end!

How is that so?
I don't know of any application that can randomly choose different flags from different CPUs or cause different thread processes to be distributed over two or more CPUs and- through either of the above mentioned- cause such to act as a single "ghost processor."
Even RISC chips- SPARC especially- are not capable of such an action.
VB is multi-threaded, it just passes one CPU core to the VM. The load is still devided over the cores you have. If I run a VM and check my processor load per processor, I see a fluctuation on them, going from 100% to 50% or lower, depening what the other core is taking. This is also confirmed by the devs. The actual Host does the load sharing IIRC. Just take a look at your own system when working in a VM.

Re: High CPU load when guest (WinXP) is idle on Ubuntu 8.04/x64

Post by bernroth »

Hi all,

some news from the frontline: I have tried to do a new installation of Windows XP in a new VM using default settings. This VM works fine and the CPU load is in a normal range. Nevertheless I just have just discovered a interesting thing:
When both Windows XP VM's are running, the CPU load of the affected VM drops to 2-4%.
As soon I shut the new Windows XP VM down, hop, the CPU load of the affected VM rises to 25%. This is reproducible.
Any way to find out why this happens? Maybe an issue with the kernel module?

BTW: In order to avoid troubles due to IO-APIC etc.. I disabled all these features of the affected VM (using a new HAL). Only ACPI is enabled.

Well, I would be happy to receive some advises and/or new steps to do.

Thanks and best regards,

Bernhard

This issue has been asked a couple of times on the forums before, but each time, we came to the same conclusion. Running a second VM will reduce the CPU usage of the VMs, but we don't know why. Or why the first VM eats up the CPU in the first place. I recall one user mentioning that when using NAT and a program like MSN was running in the background, logged on, it would eat up the CPU. When MSN wasn't logged on, no issues. But that was way back, in 1.5 or 1.6 somewhere. And it was never actually reproduced in that setting by others with the same behaviour of CPU usage (no network was used).

The NAT issue should not be the cause as I use host networking in both VM's. Maybe there is some process which causes the high CPU load but I'm unable to find out which. (I used the ProcessViewer from sysinternals). I have stopped all services and tasks on that machine, removed all unused drivers and so on. No change.
Is there some kind of diagnostics available on the host machine to get more details?
If not I think I need to wait for a new version which hopefully solves this strange issue.

Im having same problem with windows server 2003 guest.
At times it fixes itself and runs on low cpu for long time.

If your host is vt-x capable, enabling it fixes this problem for some reason.

Re: High CPU load when guest (WinXP) is idle on Ubuntu 8.04/x64

Well, I have a VT-x capable host and there is no difference in CPU usage when this feature is enabled or disabled. I already tried this.
I even disabled every feature like IO-APIC, PAE/NX, VT-x ... and did a repair-install. No change in this strange behaviour.

Just for fun's sake, could you do a new XP guest VM install and see what such VM does compared to your migrated one?
I've seen this issue as well and always traced it back to migrated VM's, when the VM is a fresh VM install it idle's quite happely. A ntbackup restore from a migration into a fresh VM leaving the system files alone also delivers an idle VM.

A new Windows XP VM performs fine and is idle.
On the migrated VM I did already many repair-installations etc.. having the same settings as with the newly installed VM. Unfortunately this does not change the issue.
The problem is that in this specific migrated Windows XP VM are so many development applications running, it would be quite impossible to make all this run in a new Windows XP installation.
This is why I try to diagnose this problem and hope that it will be solve somehow :)

Does VBox has some kind of debugging interface to find out which process/part of the guest OS causes the high load?

Not that I'm aware of, how about using ntbackup to backup/restore this VM into a fresh VM leaving the system files alone? you would keep all the software installed.

Could the suspect be SQL server? I created bug report for that: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3613

Sasquatch wrote:This issue has been asked a couple of times on the forums before, but each time, we came to the same conclusion.
I have exactly the same problem. I'm working on Ubuntu 8.10 and I was trying VirtualBox 2.1.4. When I start XP, CPU is less then 10%. After I start a program (for example Toad for Oracle) the CPU jumps over 50% and it never came under 50%. If I start the second XP virtual machine, the CPU usage drops to 25%, but still 25% of CPU is still too high for idle virtual machine and it is impossible to work because CPU is constantly jumping to 100%. I was involuntary forced to move to Vmware Server 2.0. There I have ~5% when virtual machine is idle. I hope someday this issue will be fixed.
