Installed according to website, how do I start it?

Post by dgwicks »

Greetings;

I installed virtualbox on Debian/Lenny according to the web site.

ie.
deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian lenny non-free
wget -q http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... n_vbox.asc -O- | sudo apt-key add -
aptitude update
aptitude install virtualbox-2.1

Now I don't see anyway to start it. My previous ver. installed from debian.org was just virtualbox but that doesn't work.

How do I run virtualbox-2.1?

TIA,
Dennis

An icon should appear in your menu somewhere (for me it's Applications->System tools->Sun xVM VirtualBox). If it hasn't appeared then you should try logging out then in again (or a full system reboot, just for the sake of it). Note that also you will need to add yourself to the "vboxusers" (or similar) group and that will require a log out/in anyway.

Brrrr ... shades of Windows!

Thanks. That got me a little farther. I got the entry in Applications->System tools->Sun xVM VirtualBox after reboot. Just went all the way to be sure!

But now I get the following when I try to run it. Any ideas what is the hang up now?

Code: Select all

dgwicks:~$ VirtualBox
VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Select_Size
dgwicks:~$

That looks like a freetype error. Search for freetype in synaptic and see what that shows up. You should have "libfreetype" installed (or some variation on that name). If you find it, post its version number along with anything else you think might be relevant... :)

I have libfreetype6 and libfreetype6-dev, both ver. 2.3.7-2

I did a reinstall, just for the heck of it, but it didn't help. Old Windows habits die hard! :)

I installed latest and greatest kernel:

Code: Select all

2.6.26-1-686 #1 SMP Sat Jan 10 18:29:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux
I installed/reinstalled every fontconfig and qt4 thing I could find, checked that I was a member of the vboxusers group, did

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
did a

Code: Select all

shutdown -r now
and I still have the same error!!!

Code: Select all

VirtualBox: supR3HardenedMainGetTrustedMain: dlopen("/usr/lib/virtualbox/VirtualBox.so",) failed: /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Select_Size
If anybody has any good ideas I would dearly love to hear them!
