Can not get USB to work

Post by bugs810 »

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 as the host computer, and I am running XP as the guest OS. I can not seem to get the guest OS to recognize the USB devices.

The devices show up on the guest OS USB menu, but, they are grayed out and I can not select them.

They do show up fine on the host computer. I have enabled the USB controller and I have tried withe the devices in the filter and without.

Please help. I can't seem to figure this out.

Actually, I just installed the new version of VirtualBox (2.1.4) and USB now works "out-of-the-box" without jumping through the hoops outlined in the above link. Just upgrade to 2.1.4 and you should be fine.

Add the following line to the end of your fstab file.

none /usbfs usbfs rw,devgid=501,devmode=664 0 0

Strange. I updated my system and as far as I could see, I was still able to use USB.

I'm using Fedora 10 on a Sony Vaio, have the closed source version of VirtualBox 2.1.4, run a Windows XP as a guest OS and am up to date Fedorawise.

I also tried the various suggestions as to /etc/mtab and can't get the USB to work (it appears grey when running the guest OS). On the other hand, it works perfectly on Linux (it's all unmounted there though just in case that would interfere). My user does belong to the vboxusers group.

Any ideas? Anything I can look for?

Typical, I find the answer minutes after I asked the question, and I promise I've spent a good 3 hours looking :)

This worked for me on Fedora 10 (and stays after a reboot): http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showpost. ... stcount=30
