64-bit guests on 64-bit host will not install

Post by dlgollahon »

I've tried to install Windows 7 64 and Kubuntu 64 and both completely reboot my host right up front during the install. I have a Dell Inspiron 1721 with an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, 4 GB memory, 250 GB drive. I'm using Windows 7 64 as the host. These install in VMWare server 2.0 with no problem but I want to use VirtualBox.

I use the settings suggested in the manual and have tried several times but reboot always happens. 32-bit guests work in VirtualBox just fine though.

Any ideas what could be wrong with this? (I am using VB 2.1.2 btw)

Thanks.

Yes. Plus tried many other options. None work. Always reboots the whole machine.

Yes. I saw this before. The last comment there was "Anyone figure this out yet?"

its probably a bit much to expect an unreleased (and soon to expire) beta operating system as host to work with any and all software.

have you tried vista as host?

I don't have Vista 64. I will eventually try a Linux 64 of some type. VirtualBox works fine with 32-bit OSs. Was hoping it would work with Windows 7 64.

I already tried Vista x64 (as a virtual machine, my host system is Vista x64 and all x32 OS are working without problems)
with same result, i think that problem is at x64 OS generally

there does seem to be a pattern that the amd chips like turion and athlon64 and even opterons aren't working in 64-bit mode - maybe the svm detection is broken...

it could also be a windows host problem as win7beta1, debian5, solaris10, opensolaris 2008.11 and rhel 5.3 all work fine for me in 64-bit mode with 64-bit fedora10 on a core2quad host.

You need to have AMD-V properly enabled in your BIOS to run 64 bits guests. VBox.log or the V icon in the VM window will tell you if it's being used.

An AMD-V shouldn't be an issue for me since I run an Intel Q6600 chip. If you check that other thread, I did get win 7 64bit to boot off the CD and install to a VM successfully. I ran it after it was installed fine. Same with the ubuntu 64bit disc. That booted fine and ran fine when I tried it. But that was the first time I had installed that version of VB on my Vista64 system. Since the next day (after a full shutdown and cold boot) I have been unable to run or even boot the previously installed Win7 64bit install or the DVD images of either Win7 64bit or Ubuntu 64bit. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VB, I tried uninstalling rebooting then reinstalling VB but nothing seems to work.

I am thinking that maybe something isn't being installed or uninstalled right and it might work again one time when the next version comes out. Possibly a Vista file protection thing?

Ok I just installed the latest 2.1.4 over my old 2.1.2 (amd64 version). And at the moment I can run Win7 64bit and Ubuntu 64bit guest OS!! This is on a Vista 64 Ultimate host w/ Intel Q6600 processor. If the pattern holds when I reboot my host computer VB will stop running 64bit guest.

Edit: Well I am surprised I just rebooted and VB is still working. Win7 64bit is booting up as I type this. So I guess this means the problem might be fixed in 2.1.4.

dlgollahon, you might want to update your BIOS. It's possible your laptop isn't capable of AMD-v yet. Or it won't get that option. I have an Intel T2300 processor in my laptop, 32-bit but is VT-x capable. However, I don't have the Virtualisation option in it's BIOS and VT-x is therefor not reconized. It's a shame that OEM manufacturers, especially for Laptops, don't give the full hardware support you want. They limit the BIOS as much as they can, let you pay for a processor with features you will never be able to use because of the cheap ass mainboard they add, or the limited BIOS they install on it.

I upgraded to the lastest BIOS I can find for my system (Dell A07). There is still only one option in the BIOS for enable/disable the extra VM capabilities and it defaults to Enabled. When I have ACPI, IO APIC, VT-x/AMD-V, and PAE/NX enabled my machine totally reboots when I try to install Kubuntu 64 in Virtualbox. If I have PAE/NX diabled, my machine just locks up at the install.

Here is my log file:

The log show that it's on, but in the CPU dump, it shows it's off, and unavailable in the Host (both values are on '0'). So there is a conflict somewhere. It's on, yet it isn't. It's available, yet it isn't. I don't like the way manufacturers treat their laptop branch. They limit the possibilities too much.
