Guest hangs when a USB device is attached...

Post by cludwig »

Hello all.

I have a Lenovo T61 running Ubuntu AMD64 with VBox 2.1.2 (personal use version) with XP SP 2 installed as the guest. I also have guest additions installed. All works great, but USB does not work at all for any device.

I can enable USB and create a filter and then boot into XP. When XP recognizes the device and searches for drivers, XP freezes all except the cursor. I can move the cursor, but not click or type. The only way out is to close the virtual machine.

I am added as a user:
typing "grep vbox /etc/group" in a command prompt produces the following response:
vboxusers:x:125:cludwig

Can anyone help? This problem is persistent with all types of USB devices. I'd love to get USB support. Please help. A great many thanks in advance!

Try it with a Linux LiveCD. If that doesn't hang, then it's a Windows Guest issue. Since you can select the USB device to be grabbed by the VM, it means you have set USB properly as described in the VirtualBox FAQ, with the fstab entry.

I updated to the latest release of Vbox, 2.1.4 but that did nothing for me. I also updated XP to SP3 with no change either.

I then unchecked the enable USB 2.0 controller in the settings for my Virtual Machine and now I can access USB devices, but guess I only have USB 1.1 support now.

Any idea how to get USB 2.0 working on an XP guest?
