Keep Losing Sound

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit host, running a Windows XP Pro 32-bit guest. I am using Windows DirectSound with ICH AC97 audio settings.
At seemingly random times, I will lose sound on the guest. I usually don't notice it until I try to play a video or sound file; however, it does happen occasionally during the play of a video or sound file. When sound is lost, it is lost to the entire guest; in other words, this isn't a specific program situation.
It seems that the only way to get the sound back is to delete the sound card from the device manager in the guest (Intel 82801AA AC'97 Audio Controller) and then shutdown the guest and restart it. If I delete the sound card and try the 'scan for new hardware' option, the guest will blue screen and restart automatically. I have tried restarting without deleting the device, but the sound never comes back this way.
Any ideas?
