Can't install Windows 98SE guest

Post by kapetr »

Hello

I try to install W98SE on my host VB2.1.2 on UBUNTU 8.10, but

1. the instalation is terrible slow (I have Athlon XP2000+ with 896 MB - 128MB for guest) - it takes over 2 hours ... and if fails:

2. at the near end of installation - after setting timezone, ... , by "configuring the system" - it is last step of installation, if stops ?! - better to say - it runs, and runs, .... and newer ends.

Unfortunately - this step is necessary - after VM reset it repeats ...

Also other guest OS (Live CDs of linux) are very slow - in boot up and by work.

VirtualBox is 2x slower then VMWARE player :-/

VirtualBox is very nice, but can someone really use it ?

Thanks for replay

VirtualBox is not optimized to run 16-bit code; though the use of 16-bit mode is rare in most operating systems people run in a VM, Windows 98 makes heavy use of it, this is why it's extremely slow (in VBox). Also you'll probably get into several issues when it comes to graphics drivers, sound, etc, since Windows 98 isn't an actually supported guest OS.

The best free virtualizer that can run Windows 98 quickly is probably QEMU with no acceleration (KQEMU makes Win98 even slower... similar reasons as in VirtualBox); although if you have a copy of VMware, they still support Windows 98 quite well.

Other Guests will be faster if you buy more RAM.
