Hello,

This is a newbie question... I have installed the last version of Virtualbox on my ubuntu 8.10. With the previous version I created a bridge in order to have two separates IP addresses, one for Ubuntu and another for the guest OS. Then I could do some tests between both OS.

How to do this with the new system ? Do I still need to make a bridge and a virtual interface ?

No, you just select the Host If and connect it to a host Ethernet device such as eth0. VBox does the rest.

Hopefully nowhere VB doesn't create a new interface it's hidden somehow.

Just the same as VMware does.

I don't understand...
My real question is how to communicate between the host OS and the guest one using the network ?

Example I'm on the host os, I want to ping the guest os. How to do this ?
With the bridge, the host IP was 192.168.0.1 and the guest IP was 192.168.0.10, it was easy.

With the new HIF system, you select your physical interface. If there is no link on the adapter (that is, no cable attached), then it won't work for network connectivity. The Host and Guest use the same adapter and should be able to communicate with each other, but because there is no link on it, the device is brought down by the Host.
If you want Host <> Guest communications without the need of a link on the adapter, you can use the TAP adapter you create with the UML-Utilities package. It's in almost every distro repository. See the documentation of UML-Utilities and Tunctl for more information.
