Debian package conflicts with installed package

Post by tauchris »

Hi

I currently have VirtualBox 2.0.6 installed on my Ubuntu Linux host. I just downloaded the 2.1.2 upgrade, and when I tried to install it, I got this error from the package installer:

Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'virtualbox-2.0'.

Do I need to uninstall Vbox 2.0.x before installing 2.1.2? If not, how do I get around this error? Or, if I do need to uninstall first, can anyone point me to a safe step-by-step for doing this so I don't lose any of my VMs?

Thanks!
Chris :)

Some kind of: Your package manager should automatically uninstall the virtualbox-2.0 package when you click to install the virtualbox-2.1 package. If that does not work, just uninstall virtualbox-2.0 and then install virtualbox-2.1. Doesn't matter, your VMs will be kept.

It's in the VirtualBox FAQ (proper way to upgrade).
