Windows 7 Guest on Windows Vista host

I've been having a strange intermittent problem with this. I've successfully installed Windows 7 beta and run VBox 2.1.2. I can run Windows 7 once, but if I shut down and then try to run it again, it sticks on the "Starting Windows" screen - the glowing windows icon will animate but it just sticks at this screen. I often can't get it to boot up correctly unless I wait until the next day and it will work!

If I try to run Startup Repair it just hangs at the "Windows is loading files..." progress bar.

Settings as follows: OS type Windows 7, 1024MB RAM (4GB RAM on machine), ACPI and IO APIC Enabled, everything else disabled. (Have tried IO APIC disabled too - no different). Guest Additions installed using the Vista compatibility workaround.

I'm puzzled!

2.1.2 has native GA support for W7. Remove the GA, reboot the VM then install them the normal way. It's a long shot, as it shouldn't cause problems, but you never know ;).

Can't believe I didn't think of that - didn't realise the guest additions had also been upgraded. Doh!

Thanks, seems to work fine now. :)

I'm having a similar problem, and i didn't want to create a new thread so I hope i can get support here.

Before:
Virtual box 3.0.10, Windows 7 RC Beta HOST and Windows 7 RTM GUEST, can install just fine work with the VM etc.

After:
Upgraded to virtualbox 3.0.12, same HOST installation, I'm trying another Windows 7 RTM guest installation but now it's stuck in the "Windows is loading files" screen. How can I disable guest additions when I'm trying to perform an installation?

Please help!

*EDIT* after waiting for almost 2 hours i got fed up and rebooted my machine (unthinkable in a production machine, but fairly normal on a workstation). After the reboot, the "windows is loading files" phase completed successfully in less than 2 minutes. I was gonna fill out a bug report, but since im using an unsupported windows (7 RC Beta) i decided im not going to.

well im not sure if this helps but i came across a problem running Win XP and Win 7 on Vista. I had XP up in running no problems as a virtual machine. When i tried to install Win 7 as a vitual machine i came across virtual box giving me an error when creating the hard drive image. The way around it that i figured out is to save the hd image in a seperate folder than the xp hd image. It worked! Win 7 up and running top notch. The only thing i have yet to figure out is Win 7 is telling me that it can not produce sound. Still working on this.

Hope this helps someone
