PXE Boot with Windows Deployment Services 2008

Post by DreadPirate »

Has anyone been able to get Virtualbox 2.1.2 working with PXE boot and tftp transfer in Ubuntu 8.10?

My host is a Ubuntu 8.10 AMD x64 system with 4GB of RAM, and all of the WDS servers (DC and WDS Server) are running Windows Server 2008. I have set up WDS with boot images for x86 and x64 systems, DHCP running on the DC, and tftp running on the WDS server. There is a third VirtualBox VM running on the system that I am trying to deploy an image to, and having difficulties.

All systems are running on the same internal network, within the same /24 IP range.

The issue is that while the system pxe boots off of the WDS server and is able to choose the boot image, the download of that image never completes. I typically get the error "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible" on the system to be imaged, and looking in the event log on the WDS server shows that the boot image failed to download.

Does anyone have any idea what the issue is, and what I could do to fix it? I've tried just about every combination of settings within virtualbox that I can think of, and have not found anything that works consistently.

One clarification to the issue - The initial pxe boot file is downloaded successfully, but transferring the larger boot image file used for installing windows always fails. Not always at the exact same point, but it never transfers completely.

I have the same issues. As I'm using windows, I moved my question to this thread after updating it here for some time: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 308#p63905
