Hostinterface not assigned in networksettings

Post by Peppie »

Hi everyone,

i am running win xp on my host with vbox 2.1.2 on it. Farther i have got 4 VMs:
- XP
- Vista Ultimate
- Windows 7
- Ubuntu

They are all running on Hostinterface-setting with a static ip. All have connection to the internet. The virtual networkadapter is the Intel Pro 1000 Desktop, but the other work too. I can ping each VM and the host, but can not get them to show up right in the network. Right means, that i can see them, but can not connect. I am not able to connect via rdp on them.
I tried to bridge but was not able to because i do not have any hostinterfaceconnections in my host-networksettings.
So what do i do wrong?

If you use the correct interface, so there is a link on it, then it's strange. Did you disable the firewall on the Windows Guests? Does the Ubuntu Guest run Samba or any other service that allows you to connect to it remotely (like SSH)?

like i read, there is no addbutton for interfaces anymore in the new version. its just a list of physical interfaces. That is what i see.
As i only have one physical its just one in the list. i clicked on it and its marked, nothing more. So i think its the right one. the firewall is just the one of windows itself. ill try to disable thatone and then try again. on ubuntu i didnt try to connect via rdp ;)

Ubuntu does not support RDP. Though there is some xrdp package installed that seems to listen to RDP requests. I recommend that you install openssh-server on your Ubuntu machine and connect to that with Putty or other SSH clients for Windows.

Ubuntu i leave for farther experience for now, because i know win xp best.

I now disabled the firewall on the guest. Same difference.
I see the VM when i am on my host in the windows explorer. When i click on it a signin window appears where you can write your username and PW. the username is fixed to guest. so i activated the guestaccount in my xpguest and tried to connect. it said, that i maybe dont have permission...

That pretty much looks like windows problem but i am still wondering why i dont see a hostinterface. Means:
When i open up (on my host) start-network-all networks, there is only my physical lan connection. From what i read, there should be something like vbox0, vbox1 etc too, which are then supposed to be bridged. is that still neccessary? Are vbox0, vbox1 etc still supposed to show up? i think yes.

Since 2.1.0, you no longer need the virtual interfaces. VB uses the physical interface directly through some APIs.
