NT 4.0 installation of guest additions fails

Post by fbusse »

After successful (minimal) installation of german language NT4, SP 1, I called the "guest additions" install. The additions installed without error until the request for manual or automatic reboot. Instead of reboot, their installer came up again. In a first try, I followed the installer once more, seeming to install (again) with no error, in a second try, I cancelled this second installer.

In both cases, after installation of the "guest additions", booting fails with the message "Starting at least one service failed, which should start with system startup. Please check the event protocol" (translation of german message in the below screenshot.

In this state, the VM seems not to recognize any keyboard stroke, no mouse is displayed. Even sending [Ctrl]-[Alt]-[Del] from the VB menu has no effect. The only way to escape seems a brute force power-down. On next startup of the VM, the same issus...

Any ideas?

SP 6.0a does not help

Post by fbusse »

Same issue with the recommended Service Pack 6.0a installed prior to installing the "guest additions"

check if additions files are up-to-date

Post by fbusse »

For my bugreport #590, sandervl73 suggests to check all vbox* files in the directories \windows\system32\ and \windows\system32\drivers\ and compare them to the files in the driver directory on the additions iso. All dates & times should be identical.

I will not be able to follow this advice before eve. But maybe someone else would be happy to find his problem solved this way...

Only copies of some files from the iso in /driver/* seem to be on the crippled NT system in /winnt/system32 and /winnt/system32/drivers (not in /windows).

VBCoInst.dll, VBGuest.inf and VBoxMouse.inf from /driver/VBoxGuest, /driver/VBoxVideo/VBoxVideo.inf and /driver/VBoxSF/* are not in this tree (see below screenshot).

Any ideas?

Please add your comments to ticket 590. It's too easy to miss replies here.

Ticket #590 seems having received no more comments from your side (and even worse: no solution nor workaround) after changing the priority from "major" to "critical" one month ago.

Shouldn't the "Status" on your Guest OS page at least be changed to "Works, no Additions available" as long as you positively KNOW that installing the current additions will crash a VM running WinNT4?

Appears to be solved with 1.5.2-25433_Ubuntu_feisty.

Thx to the team!

 On 1.5.0 with 1.4 additions installed I could set a resolution (about 1200x760 IIRC) which just fitted my 1280x800 laptop screen. Having installed 1.5.2 dapper I can install the 1.5 additions but there's no such mode in the mode display. Even going back to 1.4 additions it's not there. It looks like I'll have to go back to 1.5.0.

Yes, it seems to be working on 1.5.2, but I still can't get into seamless mode.

Is seamless mode supposed to work with Nt4??

Some of the APIs we use are supposed to be available in NT4 Service Pack 6. Without them seamless windows doesn't work.

I am using Nt4 Server SP6a. Any ideas on what's missing. Seamless option just appears dissabled :-S

Could anybody else confirm if seamless mode is available or not under Nt4 SP6?

Anyway, thanks to make it work even without seamless mode ;-)
