VRDP: Can't get rdesktop to connect to Windows guest

Post by KenJackson »

I can't get VRDP to work, and I'm not sure how to investigate the problem.
I don't see results in any log. What should I do to see what's wrong?

I try to connect to my Windows XP guest (named intew) with this command and get this response:

Code: Select all

$ rdesktop -a 16 intew:55000
Autoselected keyboard map en-us
ERROR: intew: unable to connect
I have network connectivity, in fact I can SSH back and forth between the guest and host.
VRDP is turned on, as indicated here:

Code: Select all

$ VBoxManage showvminfo WindowsXP|grep 'VRDP\|size'
Memory size:     752MB
VRAM size:       16MB
VRDP: enabled (Address 0.0.0.0, Port 55100, MultiConn: on, ReuseSingleConn: off, Authentication type: null)
VRDP Connection:    not active
I'm running VirtualBox 2.1.2 on Mandriva Linux 2009.0 with host interface networking.

When connecting to VRDP, you connect to the Host system, not the Guest.

Oh! That was not obvious. And now it works!

Thank you.

It is obvious if you read the manual ;). You connect to the actual Guest IP if you use it's own RDP server (not available in XP Home).

No.

I've been searching the manual for several days now. And earlier today I downloaded the one for v2.1.2 and read it.

Now that you've told me, I went back and more carefully read it, and yes, it says to use the IP address of the host. But that's very easy to miss, especially since I wasn't expecting it.

But that's what this forum is for. Thanks again.
