Windows XP Guest - no "Local Area Connection"

I have used VB on a WinXP host for a while to test/run a number of Linux distributions. Everything just worked so I never even looked at the manual.
I am now reversing it by installing (for the 1st time) VB 2.1.2 on a 100% up-to-date Ubuntu 8.10 host with WinXP as a guest. Again, just followed my nose and everything seemed OK except there were no interfaces in the XP Network Connections window - just a blank window. I checked the Device Manager and an active virtual network card was present.
I tried 3 virtual network cards (incl. downloading and installing the Intel MT Desktop 1000 drivers) with both NAT and Host Interface but still nothing. When I did the Intel one, Windows said it found the hardware and needed the drivers. I installed the drivers via a shared directory but still nothing in the "Network Connections" window.
I even ran the "Add New Connection" wizard but it returns no useful result. Am I missing something here or is there really a network issue with VB 2.1.2 ?
As it is a new installation, there are no oddities from pre-2.1.2 installations. The XP guest additions are successfully installed. Any ideas ?
The host is a Dell laptop which has real Intel network hardware.
