I installed the latest Virtual Box 2.0.x back in September and created a Windows XP Pro SP1 VM and installed the OS. Before I upgraded the OS, I copied the vdi file and gzipped it, hoping I'd be able to use that as a base should I need to recreate a VM in the future.
With VirtualBox 2.0 I successfully used the vboxmanage clonevdi comment to create copies of my SP1 vdi file so that I could have separate VMs - one with XP SP2 and the other as XP SP3.
Twice now I've had VirtualBox 2.1 give me file permission errors when trying to revert to snapshots or discard saved states of my XP VMs. I ended up having to delete my SP3 VM and vdi file to try to rebuild it after those errors. However, when I do the "vboxmanage clonehd" command to try to clone by SP1 vdi file and then create a new VM pointing to that new cloned VDI, the VM just hangs with a black screen on startup. This is the same system and the hardware hasn't changed - I'm not trying to move VMs from one system to another.
Has anyone successfully saved old VDI files for XP and then re-used them later?
Is there a way for me to find out why my XP VM is hanging on startup?
Any guidance appreciated, thanks!
Jon

This is usually because in recreating the VM, you've picked the wrong IDE controller to virtualise.
