VirtualBox screen size on Linux host

I am running Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire One with the screen size of 1024x600.
While everyone else seems to be trying to get the screen to fit a larger size - I need the screensize to be smaller as the virtual box seems to extend below the screen every time.
How do I go about to change this? I will be trying to install Windows7 Beta when I get this fixed.

The resolution that is initially used is 640x480, as that's the lowest VGA resolution in use these days. It should then go to 800x600, which in your case would result in a loss of the top and bottom parts of the VB GUI if you want to have the full view of the Guest display while remaining in windowed mode.
If you want custom resolutions, you need the Guest Additions. See the manual for how to do that. You can also set the Guest to stay at 640x480.

You are right - I installed things yesterday. I have it at 800x600
While this works, It would be great to have 1024x600 - I don't think this is possible.
800x600 works for now as long as I make it full screen - thanks for your help.

Similar problem.
Aspire One running Linpus Lite (FC8) at 1024x600.
Installed VirtualBox 2.1.2 and created XP guest.
XP runs OK at 800x600 but large areas to side of screen unused (and black).
Tried installing Guest Additions but thats worse. After GA installation I have choice of 640x480 in 32 bit or 800x600 in 16 colours. Hopeless.
Really need to get the XP guest running in 1024x600.
Are Guest Additions configurable ?

Did anyone figure this out? I am having the same problem.
Host: Ubuntu 8.10 x64
Guest: Windows 7 x64
Before the guest additions, I have resolutions all the way up to
1600x1200, of course not the one I actually need (1280x800). After
I install the additions I am limited to 800x600 and lower. Would be
very grateful if someone could please help.
Thanks for your time.

You're having a different issue. What you actually need, is the dynamic resize option. See the Machine menu for that. It should resize your Guest automatically if the GUI size changes. The others have a problem of lower resolution, and a not so common one. 1024x600 is not used often, in fact, it wasn't used before they created those small notebooks with a 9" display.
