New Here few Quick Questions (Wifi and USB Drives)

Hey I just recently download VB and I must say it is a very nice piece of software! Everything seems to be running quiet well thus far, I just had a few quick questions maybe someone can help me with.

Is there a way I can share internet with my Virtual System when I am connected VIA wifi? (When I plug in a lan cable it worked right away)

How can I get my virual system to see pen drives and other USB devices I connect?

Do I need to install drivers for things such as my wifi card on the virtual system?

By the way I am running Ubuntu 8.10 64bit and the Virtual system is Vista 32 bit

Oh one other question, I just recently got a larger HD so I now have a second partition on my physical driver, is there any easy way to move VB and/or all the systems I currently have setup on it over to this other partition?

Hi Jeff, and welcome to our forum. Have a read through the Forum Posting Guide. This contains some useful tips on how to search for VBox knowledge and how to frame Qs. The usual advice is one issue per topic, but let's kill off these Qs this time.

The new host IF supports Wifi, so this should work.

For USB under Ubuntu 8.10, this is covered in the FAQ and in various forum topics.

In terms of moving the directories to a new device, the simplest way is just to mv them or the entire .VirtualBox directory hierarchy and leave a symlink to the new location in the old containing directory.

Jeff your guest OS is running in a virtual machine not the read hardware. So in your case the guest OS will see an Am79C973 (or one of the three other NICs that you can choose), and the guest OS will need the device drivers for this.

The fact that the VBox VM Monitor (VMM) intercepts this NIC commands and forwards them onto to your real network device is entirely unknown to the guest. The same is true for the VGA, the IDE controller and so on.

So what NIC have you configured? If you look in Vista Device Manager what does it see? If you run ipconfig /all in a Command box, then what does it return? If you browse http://66.102.9.147/ do you see google?

You haven't read the Forum Posting Guide, have you? Otherwise you would realise that we can only help you if you provide the basic info we need to do so.

Jeff, the Ubuntu guide is a good one, but it covers the OSE version which doesn't support USB amongst other things. If you want this, then you will need to load the PUEL edition (see http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Editions for more info in the differences). To do this you need to uninstall OSE first and then follow the instructions on http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads to add the PUEL editions to your sources. You can then do a sudo apt-get install virtualbox-2.1. V 2.1 simplifies network setup for Wifi. Note that you can also use module-assistant with this version.

I have already installed the non OSE version VB how ever I still cannot get my USB devices connected properly, I followed the guide posted on the above Ubuntu wiki link but it still does not work. I enabled the USB devices in my VM (and the VM installed drivers for the USB next time it booted) how ever when I plug in a USB device my VM still does not see anything. Is there a different guide I should follow?

Jeff, please search for obvious answers using the tips suggested. There have been a number of posts explaining how to get usb working in Ubuntu 8.10

Not to seem ungrateful but searching "usb ubuntu 8.10" on the forum search yields many threads that are useless: Image Guess I will start sorting through for a second guide. (Like I said though I already followed the one on the Ubuntu wiki and it did not work for me)

Not if you select the option 'Search for all terms' when searching.

Damn, would you just take a look at the VirtualBox FAQ Terry already pointed you to in his first reply? No need to post a 1600x1000 pixels picture that screws up the forum layout (having to scroll horizontally is evil :P). It's also almost 1 MB, not always user friendly.

I was expecting you do a google usb ubuntu 8.10 site:forums.virtualbox.org. Having pointed you at the FPG a couple of times, I kind of thought that you could read well enough to figure it out yourself. Sorry.
