I have rather powerful laptop that came with no OS so I put Ubuntu 8.04 on it and then WinXP Prof
then I download the latest Virtualbox via package manager with the intention of viewing XP from within Ubuntu. I then had all kinds of problems trying to achieve this and read much information on the subject some of it that could paralyse the brain but I eventually was able to get virtualbox to see the CDDVD and I can now install XP with virtualbox. My question is do I NOT need XP on the computer if I install from virtualbox and could therefore un-install XP.
I would appreciate any information.

That depends on what you want to do with XP. Do you want to play games? Then you need the dual boot with XP.
Is it office work only, so type some letters, browse the web and that stuff, or download things? Then XP in a VM is enough.

It all depends on your use of the OS. A VM can handle simple things.
