I recently downloaded Windows 7 Beta and installed it using Virtualbox. I used the manual method to add guest additions (mounting the guestadditions.iso, right clicking properties of guestadditions-86, adding compatibility for Windows XP, and running the file. I did not get an error message. Additionally, after I ran it, my mouse could now go from the host and guest without hitting the right ctrl key. I went to my computer to access the shared drive by mapping the network drive but my shared folders are not available to access. (I did already specify folders to access in the main screen of Virtual Box)

What am I doing wrong.

The thing you are doing wrong, is think that everything is supported in W7, which isn't. SF won't work. Use a normal network share.

Can you please tell me how to set up a network share between Windows 7 Beta and my Windows XP or give me a link to directions to set it up?

On XP, select the foler you want to share, right-click and share it (you may well need to set security - check the Windows help for more details)

Make sure your W7Beta image is using HIF and not NAT for the networking.

Once the image is running, open Explorer and navigate to the host via network neighbourhood. Or just got there directly \\host\sharedFolder. If you can see this, then sharing should work. RIght click the folder here and select "Map network drive". Set the letter and any required credentials done.

If your host is running a firewall, that may block the guest. You may need to check your firewall's documentation.

Might be true, but doesn't that also need a Vista Guest? Some don't want to wait an hour before that's done. A normal network share is often a lot easier and faster to set up.

no i tried with every guest i could lay my hands on. I guess windows 7 needs a slightly diff fashion to connect to the network. Once connected it's ok. After doing the described procedure you can normally add folders to the windows 7 host/any guest.

So just a barebones quest setup in vista host, one transfer and after that you can add as many shares as you want.

And my trick depends on the fact you have a dualboot already, and since i can't imagine seriously into VM's anyone using a beta as the main system......

Even so you can put the vbox folder on a cd and just put it on any other that using the same bootdrive letter.

If there's enough demand i'll put together a basic quest of xp/vista and put it up on the net. That away anybody can just merge it with his setup.
