How to use SATA controller instead of IDE

I have a Host Vista Ultimate 64-bit running on SATA drives that use the Dell SAS 5/iR Integrated Controller. I can't seem to get the guest OS to see the hard drive if I select SATA hard disk when creating a new disk - it has to be the IDE Primary Master. Can anyone get me started? The only IDE in this machine runs the DVD+R/RW. Thanks.

Your physical disk controller(s) does not matter. The guest only sees a virtual one.
Proplem is probably missing drivers for an ahci controller in the guest but as you don't say what your guest is we can only guess.

For the Guest, you need to make sure that it supports the Intel ICH8M Controller. XP does not have a driver for it by default.
