Hardware laptop hp 6910p, Vista enterprise professional edition, pointsec encryption and VB 2.1.
Virtual Box installed on Vista but the virtual machine (VDI file) installed on an external HD, this is the only way to make it works.

Can you explain a bit more as to why this is the only way to get it to work?

Because if I try to install the virtual machine on the PC hard disk as soon as installation starts I get :
<Kernel panic not syncing >
Than I get :
<VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block>
I also tried to copy a .vdi file from an external HD of a a colleague to my pc HD ( a virtual machine with Ubuntu 8.10 already installed and working on another PC) and it stops and makes crash also vista, and when we tried to make the same thing copying the last slackware version installed and working on another PC to mine , when we launched the virtual machine it stopped on a point related to hdma.
There are some problems on the internal hard disk drivers that put the system in kernel panic during the installation on the internal HD , if you install the virtual machine on an external hard disk all goes fine.
I don't know if the problem depends from UBUNTU or from VB, I hope my workaround could help who has found out the same problem.
