The paste they are talking about is from VM to VM. So you have to boot the VM and paste it in there. You can use a normal network share, or USB drive to transfer it.

In other words: I need a virtual machine that loads vista, and has a .virtualbox folder that has a successful share created on it in order to copy that file into my Windows Beta 7 virtual machine that won't let me create the correct files.Sasquatch wrote:The paste they are talking about is from VM to VM. Also, I don't know how to create a network share between my computer and virtual machine.
How about an XP host and Windows 7 guest?petrossa wrote:
Given you have the same drive letters for both vista and windows 7 if you copy all, vbox will work the same in both installations.
I have used the shared folders option but find that it does not behave similar to XP, XP situation. When I go into Computer I see the CD drive with the shared folder name. When I click on it, it asks me to insert a CD. I presume that the drive refers to the DVD computer drive.
TEMP SOLUTION FOR SHARING FILES WITH WINDOWS7 MACHINE
I have an easy solution. Make a second hard drive and mount it with ALL machines as a slave.
Mount the shared folder in XP or Vista and transfer files from Shared Folder to second hard drive
Now fire up Windows7 and the files are usable from the second drive.
It takes a little more time, but I can easly run several VM's at once
I have not tried the USB option, but you may be able to use that as a shared folder as well

No that's a misunderstanding.....Sasquatch wrote:The paste they are talking about is from VM to VM. So you have to boot the VM and paste it in there. You can use a normal network share, or USB drive to transfer it.
I am talking about transfering the VDI created in vista to windows 7.
Obviously you can also add in the VDI from windows 7 by pointing the VDImanager to your vista setup
Maybe i complicated the issue by wanting to have seperate setups for both systems.
So once more but now as simple as it gets:
Boot to HOST vista, create VDI with your preferred quest. Install questadditions. IMPERATIVE: add 1 (one) shared folder. Doesnt matter what. Do a normal shutdown of your guest.
Boot to HOST windows 7. Create a machine and use the VDI created in vista HOST. Boot VM, your shared folders work
Would you mind explaining this second hard drive as I am not sure what you are referring to.areicb wrote:TEMP SOLUTION FOR SHARING FILES WITH WINDOWS7 MACHINE

I can understand that bit, in fact I already have a shared drive in the XP, XP situation.and mount it with ALL machines as a slave.
Mount the shared folder in XP
I'll give that a go when I have learnt what the second hard drive is.and transfer files from Shared Folder to second hard drive
I'll give that a go also.I have not tried the USB option, but you may be able to use that as a shared folder as well
System error 67
I am running Vista Ultimate (host) and two guests (XP pro and Windows 7). I can get shared folders to work perfectly in the xp guest using the net command, but when I open the Windows 7 guest and run the net command I get
"System error 67 has occurred. The network name cannot be found."
I see a couple of other posts on this subject but no one has seemed to addressed this situation yet.

Shared Folders and Windows 7
Having kicked of this thread I think I can now close it as I have succeeded in getting shared folders to work in Windows 7 VM.
To do this I;
1. upgraded to version 2.1.2 of virtualbox. I was on 1.5.6.
2. In windows 7 unistalled the old Guest additions via the Control Panel
3. Instaled the new Guest Additions
4. Ran the net use command
Then hey presto it appears

Would you change the version of VB to the proper one. 2.1.1 was never released, it's never an odd number when it's released. It's either 2.1.0 or 2.1.2.

I did some testing based on the approach of creating a Vista vm, mapping a shared folder, then opening a Win7 vdi in that Vista vm. This seems to work pretty reliably. I have also found that if you just create a new Vista VM and use the Win7 vdi, it works just as well without the need to map any shared folders. This lets you get things working without having to actually install Vista in the vm you will use your Windows 7 vdi in.
It works great!!
If you make sure that your Guest Additions is the right version the net use command works perfectly!! Check it in the add/remove programs in the Control Panel and if it isn't the current version, uninstall it and reinstall it and your problems go away!!

Thanks to all who helped in figuring this out. It is really appreciated!!
