USB Support In Ubunto 8.10 Host With Win XP Guest
I've read the manual's instructions on setting up USB filters but I am totally missing something. I installed VB (not the OSE version) from the repository and have XP SP3 running as a guest on Ubuntu 8.10. I just can't get VB to see the USB devices that I plug in. I've searched this forum and used Google but I just can't find what I need. Heck, I don't really even know what to search for.
Can someone point me in the right direction?

Just to confirm - I downloaded VirtualBox from here
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
which is not the -OSE version. This should support USB but I can not get it to work.
All help is appreciated.
Thanks.

USB is explained in the VirtualBox FAQ. After that, add an empty filter and select the USB device from the Devices > USB menu.

Thank you guys for showing me the right direction. I was able to get a USB dongle working for an important piece of professional software that I use and now it just... works. I'm delighted.

The FAQ is what I needed. It will be a day or two before I get to try it because of my working schedule but I'll read through the FAQ and try the suggestions there. I'll report back soon.Sasquatch wrote:USB is explained in the VirtualBox FAQ. After that, add an empty filter and select the USB device from the Devices > USB menu.
Thank you.
I was able to solve the problem you are having in Intrepid by following the instructions at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VirtualBox#USB
The only thing that I found unclear was when it says to paste the text at the end of the do_start() function. That means to paste it in right before the " } ".
I haven't created any USB filters, either, but I've been able to detect multiple USB devices in my Virtualbox machine so for me at least the instructions above were all I needed to get USB working.
