After updating to VirtualBox 2.1.0, I have multiple problems with using my guest operating system (Ubuntu 8.10 x86).
I use VBox on two machines:
1) AMD Athlon64 3000+ (1800 MHz), 2 GB RAM, Windows XP SP3 x86: When I install / use Ubuntu, the computer (host) randomly hangs for a couple of minutes, then a few seconds returns to normal and so on. During the minutes of normal activity, the guest machine acts like it fast-forwards, for example:
- plays sounds twice or more the normal speed
- loading bars and animations run at a very high speed
This happens for only a couple of seconds, then it returns to the hanging state, which makes my computer unusable, unless I run and wait for Task Manager to appear, then close the VirtualBox process.
2) Dell D630 with Intel Core2 Duo (2,2 GHz), 3 GB RAM, Windows Vista SP1 x86: Installing and running Ubuntu works fine, but when I want to shutdown, it hangs with a console interface with a "_" cursor. After 10-15 minutes, it shows some linux console messages, then shuts down.
One problem which appears on both machines is that after installing the guest additions, mouse integration doesn't work.
Before, I used VirtualBox 1.6.x and 2.x (till 2.1.0) and haven't encountered any of these problems.
I uninstalled VBox 2.1.0, deleted the application data, then installed VBox 2.0.6 (the last version that worked fine), but the problems remain. Could this happen because VBox leaves some drivers even when uninstalling, then uses them on new install?
The virtual machine settings are: Other (and tried with Ubuntu too) OS, usually 1018/1024 RAM (but tried with 512 and 768 too), dynamic virtual HDD, the other settings are left default.

Your first issue has been discussed before here on the forums. Check the Windows Guests forum for more info. See the Forum Posting Guide for how to find more information on the forums.
Your second issue, with the shutdown, what if you change the VTY to different displays, usually VTY 7 displays the shutdown progress. You can then see what is stalling it. Press Host + F7 to switch to it.
2.1.2 was released today, so try that too. It has a lot of fixes.
