Have a look at this picture, vista host, xp guest, vb 2.06.
On the left system properties of the vista host, dual core detected.
On the right XP guest also dual core detected ???

It's normal that it detects the dual core CPU, but VB will only address one CPU when the VM is working. The speed of the CPU can change from time to time in the Guest. What you see is what I saw too on my laptop, a different speed than the actual speed of the CPU. This can be due to speed stepping capabilities of the CPU.

Ok, but why is there then a hal problem ? anyone from development care to explain this ?
Ie.:
1. detect dual core, but install single core hal, finish install and (re)detect a dualcore while running a single core hal without a bsod... If I do this on real hardware you always get a bsod when intermixing the wrong kernal.

If you get a BSOD, then there is something else wrong with your hardware. I upgraded my PC last year from a single core to a dual core CPU, and it detected the new CPU, installed the multiprocessor kernel, wanted to reboot and everything was fine.
