VirtualBox killed sound device in host!

Hi

I just installed Sun VirtualBox on my XP SP3 PC. I used it previously on this machine but I recently re-imaged and needed to re-install.

After the install, which seems to work fine, I have a server 2003 and an XP virtual machines running nicely. BUT my host XP has lost sound.

All drivers are there. It has appropriate entries in Device Manager. But Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel states there is NO AUDIO DEVICE, and the drop down box is greyed out.

So I reinstalled all drivers. No change

So I downloaded the latest audio drivers (Realtek AC'97 for Foxconn MotherBoard) and installed. No change.

So I loaded BIOS and disabled the audio, then uninstalled all applications and drivers for audio, and also uninstalled VirtualBox. Reinstalled latest audio drivers. No change.

This is driving me insane – my only recourse is to re-iamge my PC, and I fear I will just end up here again.

Any advice GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Hunter

If the host as no audio, how do you know it's a problem of VB? Please don't ask questions here that don't concern VB, there are other forums for that. VB does nothing with the Host audio system, it only uses it like any other audio program like Windows Media Player.

Well it happened after installing VirtualBox. IMO it concerns VirtualBox. Thanks anyway.

AFAIK VirtualBox uses the host's audio device the same way every other app does. Your problem is likely unrelated.

Try uninstalling the drivers and using Windows Update to find working ones. If Windows Update doesn't find any, install ones from the manufacturer's website or from the discs that came with your computer. If it still doesn't work, reboot. If it still doesn't work, it might be a hardware failure.
