'Contents ... (F1)' and 'Check for Updates ...' not working

Post by chessweb »

I use VirtualBox 2.0.4 (OSE) on Ubuntu 8.10 as host with WinXP as guest and had it installed via the Synaptic package manager.

Two problems:

1. Nothing happens when I open the menu item 'Help' and click on 'Contents ...' or F1 even though kchmviewer is installed.

2. Another issue is that the item 'Check for Updates ...' is permanently disabled even though the installed version is not the most recent which is 2.1.

Any advice?

If you installed VirtualBox through the Synaptic Package Manager, it will automatically update when a new version is made available within whatever repository you installed from (the same functionality is disabled in Firefox and Thunderbird for this reason).

If you want to upgrade to 2.1.0, try doing an apt-get update and apt-get upgrade to update all packages on your system. If no updates exist for VirtualBox and you don't want to wait until the updates are pushed into the repos, uninstall VirtualBox from within Synaptic, then download and install the .deb file from the VirtualBox homepage :).

As for the first question, it's possible that the help file isn't supplied with the OSE version. You can download the manual from the download section on the website though.
