No sound

Post by incus »

Hi!
I have installed Windows XP SP3 on my host - Arch Linux, kernel 2.6.24.

I have no sound, no matter which sound option I choose.

When I choose AC97, Windows plays files but I can't hear anything. Sometimes a short noise, especially instead of boot sound.

When I choose Soundblaster 16, Windows don't see any soundcard.

I've tried OSS, Alsa, Pulse.

Any ideas?
TIA

Alsa and Pulse should be used, OSS only if you know you installed that (it's not shipped by default). Alsa should always work. Check if you Host can play sound properly. You might have a config error. You also need to check the volume levels, they may be too low.

Host can play sound properly and volume levels in Windows are fine.

I have the same problem with Suse 11.0, 2.6.25.18-0.2-pae, KDE 3.5.x, VirtualBox 2.1.0_OSE .

In SuSE host sound works, in guest WinXP Prof SP2 not - with ALSA/OSS/Pulse it looks like it should work (no problems reported in Windows guest and soundcard is present), but I can't hear any sound.

EDIT: Sorry, PulseAudio works!

Incus, can you play sound from two media programs at the same time? So VLC and Mplayer for example? If you can't, then you have an audio sharing problem that you need to fix. This is usually caused by hardware locking in the player options (selected the hardware instead of default).

Yes, I can. I have Soundblaster Live! 5.1 (emu10k1), so it has hardware mixer.

I have the same sound card, no issues with either ALSA or PulseAudio (currently, I use Pulse but have VB setup to use ALSA for compatibility on my laptop, which uses ALSA).

I really suggest that you take a closer look on your audio setup. Any error in the VB logs?

I've got the same problem I guess. ALSA is fine and I can play Youtube and use Mplayer at the same time too. However Virtualbox always says 'host audio not responding'. I don't have any .asoundrc file in my home directory.
