Ubuntu 64 bits on Ubuntu 32 bits / VirtualBox 2.1

Post by cdvddt »

Hello, I'm willking to try the 64bits version of my OS.
To do so, I've upgraded to VirtualBox 2.1.

My host system is a Ubuntu 8.10 32bits on a 64bits bi-proc AMD PC.

The guest os I'm trying to install is Ubuntu 8.10 desktop 64 bits.

At the very beginning of the installation, after choosing my language and clicking "Install", the VirtualMachine fails with a guru meditation dialog box.

As asked in the dialog box, I provide the log file and the png image (not very helpful...) :

Thanks for your help !

That Guru Meditation is not a good thing. Did you check the manual to see what you need for 64 bit guests? Maybe you are missing something and it puts VB to the Guru thing after a while.

Same issue on my Ubuntu box (Intrepid 32bits). I'm trying to install a vm under VBOX running Ubuntu Jaunty 64bits, but the vm hangs after booting from the iso image.
Tried to install VBOX under windows xp 32 bits and..... the Ubuntu 64 bits vm started without any problems. So i think it's a bug in Virtualbox for
Linux.
Thanks for help.

It's possible that VB cannot handle the 2.6.28 kernel, especially the 64 bit build of it, properly. I have two VMs that run the 2.6.28 kernel, but both are 32 bit. Please wait for the next release, hopefully, the new kernel is supported there.

Cannot install Ubuntu Intrepid 64 client on Intrepid64 host

Post by wilbur.harvey »

I am running the new v2.1.2 virtual box.
I have an Ubuntu Intrepid 64-bit host, and am trying to install Ubuntu Intrepid 64-bit client. As soon as I press enter to install from the CD image, the window is black and nothing happens. The cpu is at about 50% usage.
It works fine if I try to install 32-bit Intrepid.
My host machine is an Intel Core2 Quad.

I have tried all the combinations of networks etc that I can think of.

Any ideas?
